Poem: How will you love this world?
Written in response to the witness statement by David Attenborough in his documentary A Life on this Planet
Remember
the trees breathe you
the ocean carries you, in its
blue deep, heart beat
clouds shift this way, that way
to delight you
the moon glows its gratitude
the stars burn with their faith
the sun shines joy every day
and every night, because it doesn’t go away at night
Remember
the soil, the dirt of all that has been,
carries your footprint
the blade of grass lifts its head to see you,
then bends with your weight
the rocks are steadfast, convinced of your goodness
the mountains refuse to give up on you
glaciers hold their awe in frozen perfection
bird-song, insect-hum, animal-call -
the song of the forest serenades you.
Planet earth, in the ever and ever sky,
bestows its ever and ever love on you
and you remember,
you sink to your knees,
you cry out, weep, laugh and dance.
You sing a love song right back.
